Piano Pavilion in Lahti, Finland

The Piano Pavilion, commissioned by the Wood in Culture Association, was completed in early June 2008 in the immediate vicinity of the Sibelius Hall in Lahti, Finland. The principle idea of the construction was to use new environmentally friendly materials in the café’s structures.

The light coloured UPM ProFi Deck matches beautifully with the environmentally sound Piano Pavilion. Made from recycled materials, the plank board is at home near the lake, as the popular café’s terrace.

Swedish-born Gert Wingårdh, one of the most renowned Nordic architects, designed the building, which echoes and celebrates the work of Italian Renzo Piano, recipient of the 2000 Spirit of Nature Wood Architecture Award. According to Wingårdh, the building resembles a ship ready to be launched. The concave roof opens the building up towards Vesijärvi, and an aspen fringe reminiscent of fish bones finishes the roof construction.
